How to Use ChatGPT Ethically for University Assignments in the UAE
There is no UAE-wide list of AI uses that every course permits. Check the assignment brief, instructor and institutional policy first. Keep the research, analysis and final submission under your own responsibility.
Whose rules decide whether AI assistance is allowed?
Your course and institution set the boundaries, and a target journal or funder may add rules. Khalifa University’s Academic AI Tools guide advises checking the applicable requirements, verifying claims and references, protecting confidential data and acknowledging AI use when required. It explicitly says that a tool’s appearance in its guide does not mean approval for every assessment.
The American University of Sharjah’s academic-integrity code describes unacknowledged generative-AI assistance as a potential plagiarism or inappropriate-collaboration issue and tells students to confirm course requirements. These are institutional examples, not blanket permission or a rule for every UAE university. If the brief is unclear, ask the instructor before using a tool on assessed work.
Check each proposed use before you begin
- Define the task: is the tool helping you understand a concept, explore possible questions, organise your own notes, edit language or create assessable text?
- Read the rule: does the course permit that specific type of assistance? A general university statement may not override an assignment restriction.
- Protect information: do not paste private participant data, unpublished research, confidential client material or another student’s work into a tool without permission and an approved handling route.
- Verify everything: open the original sources, check quotations, dates, statistics and references. Never cite an AI-generated reference you have not found and read.
- Disclose if required: record what tool was used, for what purpose and what human review you performed, in the format the course requests.
A use that is acceptable for one assignment may be prohibited for another. “AI detection” scores are not a permission system; compliance depends on what you did and the applicable rules.
From an AI suggestion to your own verified work
A student asks for possible ways to compare two theories. The tool suggests three differences and two references. Before using any of it, the student checks whether brainstorming is permitted, reads the original texts, rejects any inaccurate reference and writes the comparison from their own analysis. If disclosure is required, the student states that AI was used for initial brainstorming.
This is an example of a process, not a statement that brainstorming is permitted in your course. Asking a tool to write the final assessed answer, invent survey results or paraphrase borrowed text to conceal its source crosses a different boundary. Human editors also must respect the course’s permitted scope.
Student questions about ChatGPT and assignments
Can I use ChatGPT to find sources?
It may suggest search terms or a source to verify, if the course allows that use. Search a library database or publisher site and read the original item before citing it. A plausible title or DOI in a generated answer may be wrong.
Can I paste my draft for feedback?
Only if the assignment and data-handling rules permit it. Remove confidential or sensitive material and understand the tool’s terms before sharing unpublished work. Ask your instructor where the rule is unclear.
