Do You Need a Cover Letter for a UAE Job Application?

Start with the employer’s instructions. A cover letter is useful when it is required or when a short, relevant explanation adds context the CV cannot show. It is not a guaranteed interview tool.

Decision

When to write one

  1. The vacancy requires it: follow the requested format, length and upload method. A missing required document can leave an application incomplete.
  2. The application allows it and you have something useful to add: explain a role change, relevant project, location move or reason for the employer that is not obvious from the CV.
  3. You are contacting a specific person: a concise note can explain why you are reaching out and which vacancy you mean.

The UAE Government’s job-search guidance recommends an impressive cover letter alongside an honest CV. This is general advice, not a rule that every UAE application requires a letter. LinkedIn’s employer posting guidance says employers should specify a cover letter or resume in the job description if they want one.

When to skip

When a separate letter may add little

If the employer’s system has no cover-letter field and the listing asks only for a CV, complete the requested application carefully rather than forcing a letter into the wrong field. If the form asks screening questions, answer those questions directly. A generic letter repeating the CV can be less useful than a tailored CV and complete application.

Do not infer from a sector or seniority level that a cover letter will be read. Employers, teams and portals differ. There is no verified UAE-wide statistic showing that letters always improve shortlisting, or that an applicant tracking system discards them.

Structure

What to put in a useful cover letter

Opening: name the specific role and explain why your experience fits the organisation. Evidence: choose one or two examples tied to the vacancy; state your contribution and a result you can support. Close: confirm interest and invite a conversation. Keep the voice natural and the claims consistent with the CV.

Generic: “I am passionate, hardworking and the perfect candidate.” Stronger, if true: “I managed monthly supplier reports for a UAE construction team and built an exception tracker that helped the project manager resolve overdue approvals. Your procurement-coordinator vacancy asks for the same reporting and follow-up work.”

Review every sentence before submission

A drafting tool can help organise ideas, but it can invent experience, company facts or job requirements. LinkedIn’s cover-letter assistance guidance warns that generated text may make mistakes and should be reviewed. Do not paste private employer documents, confidential client results or sensitive personal information into an unapproved tool. You remain responsible for the letter sent in your name.
