What Statistical Help Is Legitimate on a GCC Thesis?
Every postgraduate researcher in the Gulf eventually asks it: how much help with my statistics am I allowed to get? The market answers by selling whatever you will pay for. The universities answer precisely — some of them run their own statistical consulting units, and one of the region’s largest explicitly rations who may use its service. Nobody has put the actual answers in one place. Here they are, with sources.
The supply side is why this page exists. Visible Arabic-language providers openly sell the assessable output itself — one advertises “the complete fourth chapter… tables, graphs, and precise scientific interpretation” (corroborated from the provider’s own service page). Meanwhile the permissibility question is being asked seriously in Arabic — a widely read fatwa draws a careful line between bounded statistical help and betrayal of the degree — and no provider answers it honestly. The honest answer exists, and it is not a matter of opinion: universities have written it down.
What the policies actually say
King Saud University — rationed, and not for students
KSU’s Deanship of Scientific Research offers statistical analysis support restricted to “faculty members and researchers only” — postgraduate students are excluded — rationed to one request per month and five per year, on condition that the researcher acknowledges King Saud University in the published research. Read that twice: the region’s largest university rations legitimate statistical support for its own faculty, and offers students none. Both facts describe unmet demand. Qatar University & UAEU — consulting for students is legitimate
Qatar University runs a Statistical Consulting Unit serving “faculty, staff and students”; UAE University’s serves “researchers, faculty, and graduate students”. The universities themselves have decided that a student sitting down with a statistician is not cheating — it is infrastructure. The question was never whether help is allowed; it is which help. AUS — the offense has a name
The American University of Sharjah’s integrity framework names “Inappropriate Collaboration” among its offenses, and thesis students confirm in writing that the work was completed without unauthorized assistance. Whatever help you take, you will be signing your name over it. Official-primary — AUS published integrity guidance.
The Western consulting norm — advise, run, never write
The University of Georgia’s Statistical Consulting Center will advise a thesis student and will run data analyses — but does not write statistical analyses for a thesis, and encourages the supervisor to attend the first meeting. UConn’s Statistical Consulting Services draws the accounting line: under ~15 hours of help earns a named acknowledgment; a substantive intellectual contribution to design or analytic strategy opens an authorship conversation. Help is normal. Hidden help is not. Official-primary — both centers’ published policies.
The same line, in religious terms
Asked whether paying for thesis statistical analysis is permissible, a widely cited Islamic ruling distinguishes exactly as the universities do: outsourcing work the degree certifies as your own is a betrayal of trust; bounded help through which the student genuinely masters and owns the analysis is permissible. Two very different authorities, one line. Corroborated — IslamQA ruling 293756.
What the market sells instead
Against all of the above, the visible regional market sells completed chapters, “precise scientific interpretation” included, with no acknowledgment trail and no supervisor in the loop — and increasingly, rewrites engineered to survive AI-detection screening. Those services do not have an ethics problem at the margin; the product itself is the violation the integrity codes name. Corroborated — providers’ own service pages.
The line, stated plainly
Legitimate — with acknowledgment and your supervisor aware: advice on study design and sampling before data collection; running analyses on your own lawfully collected dataset; verifying and reproducing an analysis you or an AI tool produced; rebuilding output tables to APA or your university’s standard; coaching you through what your results mean until you can explain them without notes; preparing you for the questions a viva panel will actually ask. This is what university consulting units themselves do, and the acknowledgment section of your thesis is where it is declared.
Not legitimate — for anyone, at any price: writing the interpretation or any assessable chapter in your voice; choosing or adjusting results to support a preferred conclusion; rewriting AI-flagged text so it screens as yours; presenting analysis you cannot explain as your own work. No framing fixes these — not “you remain the author,” not a plagiarism report, not a money-back guarantee.
And the honest part about AI: AI tools will run your tests and draft fluent interpretation today — which is precisely why the paid task of “running SPSS” is dying, and why integrity screening now reads statistical interpretation so closely. What survives, and what a viva has always tested, is the part no tool can carry for you: knowing why this test, defending this result, owning this conclusion. Help that builds that is worth paying for. Help that replaces it is worth nothing — it just costs more later.
For faculty and publishing researchers, the calculus is different and simpler: statistical consulting on research papers is standard worldwide, acknowledged or co-authored by contribution — and in the Gulf it is demonstrably scarce: KSU rations it for its own faculty, and peer-reviewed work describes UAE institutions’ access to biostatistical support as limited. If you are writing for publication rather than for a degree, bounded help is not an ethics question at all; it is a resourcing one.
