Similarity and language rules in Saudi theses
Saudi universities check similarity at different points, and they put responsibility for the language on the student. Four examples:
- KFUPM: before a public oral defence can be requested, the final draft must be screened for plagiarism; the guidelines state that a similarity index of at most 15% is acceptable.
- Princess Nourah bint Abdulrahman University: when the thesis is complete, the supervisor sends the department head a similarity report from the university’s approved software, stating the filters used. The graduate guide sets a maximum figure, so confirm the current rule with your department.
- KAUST: after the examination, the final PDF goes through Turnitin and the similarity report goes to the advisor. Proofreading is the student’s sole responsibility, and the advisor will return a thesis that has not been sensibly edited or proofread.
- King Saud University: the thesis must be free of language errors, and the rules warn that many typing errors can lead to rejection. They do not ask for an editing certificate.
