Turn the assessment instructions into a writing plan
Before researching, identify the question, required learning outcomes, word limit, evidence types, citation style, submission format and marking criteria. If the brief asks you to evaluate, a descriptive list may miss the task. If it asks for a case analysis, explain how you selected evidence and how it supports your conclusion.
Build a short outline with a claim for each main section and the evidence needed to test it. Allocate room to analysis rather than spending most of the word count on background. Keep the brief open while drafting; generic “university assignment” templates cannot replace your module requirements.
A five-pass assignment review
- Answer: underline the exact question and check whether the introduction and conclusion answer it.
- Argument: write a one-sentence claim beside each paragraph. Remove or reposition paragraphs that do not advance the answer.
- Evidence: trace each statistic, quotation, figure and paraphrase to a source you actually read. Separate evidence from your interpretation.
- Referencing: compare in-text citations and the reference list with the required style and your institution’s examples. A citation style is not interchangeable simply because both use author and date.
- Presentation: check headings, tables, captions, word count, file format and proofreading after the substantive review.
For example, “social media improves customer loyalty” is a broad claim. A stronger paragraph would define the customer group, identify a relevant study, explain its method or limitation and state what that evidence does and does not support. This is analysis, not just a larger number of citations.
Where draft feedback ends and misconduct begins
Policies differ by university and module. Khalifa University’s academic-integrity policy identifies completing another student’s work as an inappropriate proxy. UAE University’s policy describes presenting another person’s work as your own without acknowledgement as plagiarism. These are examples of institutional rules; check the policy that governs your own submission.

What useful feedback can look like
Student draft: “The survey proves all UAE consumers prefer this service.”
Ethical feedback: “The sample described here covers 42 respondents from one campus. State how they were recruited, avoid generalising to all UAE consumers, and explain what the result can support.”
The reviewer has identified a reasoning problem. The student must decide how to revise the claim and check the underlying data. This differs from replacing the student’s analysis with a new argument written by someone else.
