One-Way Video Interviews in the UAE: How to Prepare

A recorded interview is one stage in some UAE employers’ hiring processes. Prepare for the actual role, follow the invitation’s instructions and practise concise evidence-based answers—without assuming every employer uses the same platform or scoring rules.

Know the stage

What employers currently publish

flydubai’s cabin-crew recruitment page places an on-demand video interview after its online assessment and before application review and assessment days. Its pilot and other role pages describe different stages, so use the page for the role you actually applied to. Etihad’s current cabin-crew page describes invitation-only Assessment Days with group, aptitude and final-interview stages. Its recruitment privacy policy says applicants may be invited to video interviews or digital assessments on a secure third-party platform. Do not assume that a recorded interview is part of every Etihad vacancy.

These are employer examples, not a UAE-wide rule. If you are applying to a bank, public entity or another airline, check its current vacancy and invitation. An assessment centre, live panel or skills test needs different preparation; Emirates NBD’s Ruwad programme, for example, lists presentation, group discussion and psychometric work at an assessment centre rather than treating every stage as a video recording.

Before recording

Prepare in five practical steps

  1. Confirm the invitation. Open the employer’s official career account or a known recruitment contact and check the role, deadline, platform, identity requirements, practice option and any permitted retakes. Do not pay a recruitment fee or share bank details to unlock an interview; Etihad warns against recruitment-payment scams.
  2. Map three role requirements to evidence. For each, write a short example showing the situation, your action and a verifiable result. Cabin crew applicants may need service and safety examples; an engineering applicant needs different evidence.
  3. Test the setup. Check your device, microphone, camera, browser, connection, lighting and a quiet background. Follow the platform’s own practice screen if one is offered. Do not assume a particular time limit, number of questions or retake rule.
  4. Practise aloud, then stop scripting. A brief opening and a clear example are easier to follow than a memorised paragraph. Use notes only if the instructions allow them. Avoid exaggerated achievements or details you cannot substantiate later.
  5. Leave time to submit. Finish before the invitation expires, check any completion confirmation and keep the email or portal receipt. If the platform fails, use the official support route immediately and record the issue.
Answer structure

Turn a vague claim into a short example

Before recording, choose one genuine incident that shows a role-relevant decision. Note the situation, the action you took and what happened. The comparison below shows why a concrete action is easier to assess than a broad personality claim.

For a leadership or technical role, adapt the example to the vacancy. Show your decision, trade-off and measurable scope where it can be disclosed. A concise answer should make sense to someone who has not read your CV, while staying consistent with it.

Answer practice

Compare a vague answer with useful evidence

Too vague

“I handle pressure well and always make customers happy.” This gives the assessor no situation, decision or observable result.

More useful

“When a handoff was delayed, I checked the available options, told the customer what would happen next and recorded the issue for the next shift.” Use only your own truthful example; add an outcome only if you can support it.

Self-check: Does the answer name your action? Does it fit the role? Could you explain the same event in a later live interview without changing the facts? If not, revise your notes before recording.

After submission

Keep the wider application moving

A completed recording is not an offer or a guarantee of a live interview. Monitor the official candidate portal and follow the stated next-step timeline. Continue suitable applications rather than pausing your search around one employer. If invited to a later stage, prepare for that stage’s actual tasks—group exercise, presentation, technical discussion or panel questions—as specified by the employer.

For flydubai applicants, our application and CV guide covers the earlier portal and role-targeting stage. Interview examples should align with the experience and claims in the CV you submitted.
