How to Avoid Plagiarism in UAE University Assignments

Build an original argument, credit each source and follow your own course rules. A similarity percentage alone cannot tell you whether a submission is academically sound.

Begin with your institution’s instructions

Read the assignment brief, citation-style requirement and academic-integrity policy before writing. Rules for collaboration, reusing your prior work and generative AI can differ by university, department and assignment. When an instruction is unclear, ask the instructor before submitting. Keep the response within the permitted help and authorship boundaries.

Turnitin explains that a similarity report highlights text matches; it does not determine plagiarism. A properly cited quotation can match. A low score does not prove that an uncited idea is original. Read the matched passages and your course policy instead of trying to reach a universal target percentage.

A source-to-draft workflow that protects your authorship

  1. Record the source as you read. Save author, title, year, page or section and a working URL or DOI. Mark direct quotations in your notes so they cannot be mistaken for your own prose later.
  2. Write the point you want to make. Close the source, explain the idea in your own structure and then check that you have represented it fairly. Changing a few words in the same sentence pattern is not a reliable paraphrase.
  3. Cite the borrowed idea. Add an in-text reference even where your words differ. Use quotation marks or the required block format when you reproduce exact wording.
  4. Build the reference list from actual citations. Match names, dates and titles, and check that every in-text citation resolves to the right entry.
  5. Review your own previous submissions. If you want to reuse part of earlier coursework, follow the assignment rules and obtain permission where required; a citation alone may not make reuse acceptable.

The UAEU graduate handbook’s academic-integrity guidance specifically addresses changing words while retaining the source’s structure and meaning without credit. Use your current institutional handbook as the controlling rule for your assignment.

Worked example: paraphrase the idea, not just the words

Source note: “Service speed affects customer satisfaction” in a published study. Do not merely replace “affects” with “influences” and “speed” with “quickness.” Instead, explain the relationship you are analysing: “In our clinic survey, waiting time is one possible contributor to patients’ overall satisfaction; other factors such as communication may also matter (Author, Year).” Then check that the cited study supports that narrower claim. “Author, Year” is a placeholder for the real source, not a citation to submit.

Keep your own analysis visible: what did you observe, how does it compare with the source, and what remains uncertain? That distinction is more useful than a paragraph built from lightly altered quotations.

How to review a similarity report

Open each substantial match. Check whether it is a quotation, a correctly cited paraphrase, routine terminology, a reference entry, your own prior submission or uncited copied material. Fix the underlying attribution or authorship issue. Do not remove citations, distort quotations or use paraphrasing tools simply to lower the percentage. Turnitin’s student guide says there is no single acceptable number for all assignments; your instructor interprets the report.

If your institution permits AI assistance, check the exact permitted uses and disclosure requirement. Keep a record of your drafts and sources. Do not assume an AI-detection result or similarity score is a disciplinary finding. For a detailed explanation of these reports and published UAE university rules, see our Turnitin similarity guide.

What ethical editing support can do

An editor can flag unclear sentences, inconsistent citations, missing reference details and places where a source claim needs checking. You remain the author and decide how to revise. Labeeb’s academic integrity editing service is consultation-led; we confirm the allowed scope against your institution’s rules. We do not promise a similarity score, write assessed work on your behalf or guarantee acceptance.

Bring the assignment brief, required style, current draft, source list and deadline. If the institution limits outside assistance, tell us before work begins.
