How to Prepare Your Thesis for Supervisor Review & Defense
Prepare the document, the university’s formal milestones and your own explanation of the research. The exact defence format and deadlines depend on your programme’s current rules.
Confirm which review you are preparing for
A supervisor draft review, committee examination, master’s thesis defence and PhD dissertation defence are not one event. Each may have a different version of the document, approval path and deadline. For example, Khalifa University’s master’s thesis guidance describes adviser review, supervisory-committee submission, a graduation timeline and a public presentation followed by private examination. Its PhD dissertation guidance lists separate eligibility, intent and submission requirements. These are examples of one university’s rules, not a UAE-wide template.
Ask your graduate office for the current programme handbook, formatting guide, submission form, committee process and date. Our GCC thesis submission rules lookup can help locate published sources, but the programme’s own current instructions govern.
Prepare a version your supervisor can review efficiently
- Confirm the required version and submission format. Label the draft clearly and include the research question, method, results and conclusions that are ready for review.
- Check the chain of reasoning: question to design, data, analysis, interpretation and contribution. Mark where evidence is incomplete rather than hiding it.
- Audit tables, figures, references, ethics approval and appendices against actual source files. Fix inconsistent terminology and missing cross-references.
- Use the university’s template and formatting rules. A generic layout is not a substitute for institution-specific requirements.
- Send a brief cover note that identifies decisions you need from the supervisor and a realistic response deadline.
Do not assume that polishing the language makes a thesis defensible. A methodological or evidence gap needs scholarly work by the researcher and supervisor. Ethical editing can improve clarity and consistency without inventing data or writing the argument on the student’s behalf.
Practice explaining decisions, not memorising scripted answers
| Question family | Preparation task |
|---|---|
| Why this question? | Explain the problem, gap and scope using a small number of cited sources |
| Why this method? | Connect design, sampling, measures and analysis to the research question |
| What did you find? | Explain the key result, uncertainty and any contradictory evidence |
| What are the limits? | State what the study cannot establish and why |
| What follows? | Describe the contribution and reasonable next research or practice step |
Use your own thesis to generate questions and rehearse concise responses. If you do not know an answer, explain what you can verify and how you would investigate the rest. No set of “examiner questions” can predict a committee’s decisions. Khalifa University’s published format is one example; your institution may allocate different presentation, question and private-examination stages.
Plan for documented corrections
Check the official decision and deadline before editing. Record each requested change, the chapter or page, the action taken and the evidence in a response table. Distinguish mandatory corrections from optional suggestions; ask the supervisor when instructions conflict. Our corrections response table is a working aid, not a substitute for the university’s form.
Labeeb can help with mock-viva practice and corrections organisation, formatting or ethical language editing. The research, interpretations and answers remain yours. We cannot guarantee defence approval or write a thesis on your behalf. Share the institution, programme, stage, draft and deadline through a consultation to scope suitable support.
