Business Model Canvas (2026): The 9 Blocks, a UAE Example, and When You Need a Full Business Plan
The business model canvas puts your whole business on one page in nine blocks. It is a fast way to test an idea. This guide explains each block, works through an illustrative UAE example, and shows when a canvas is enough and when a bank, free zone or investor will ask for more.
The nine blocks of the business model canvas
The canvas was introduced by Alexander Osterwalder and Yves Pigneur in Business Model Generation. Its nine blocks are:
- Customer segments: the groups of people or organisations you serve.
- Value propositions: the problem you solve or the need you meet for each segment.
- Channels: how you reach customers and deliver the value.
- Customer relationships: the kind of relationship each segment expects, such as self-service, personal or subscription.
- Revenue streams: how and how much each segment pays.
- Key resources: the assets the model depends on, such as people, licences, equipment or data.
- Key activities: the most important things you must do well.
- Key partnerships: suppliers and partners you rely on.
- Cost structure: the main costs of running the model.
Fill in the right side (customers, value, channels, relationships, revenue) first, then the left side (resources, activities, partners, costs).
Illustrative example: a Dubai corporate catering start-up
A fictional example to show how the blocks connect. It is not a real company.
- Customer segments: offices of 50 to 300 staff in business districts; event organisers.
- Value proposition: healthy, pre-ordered team lunches delivered on time, with one monthly invoice.
- Channels: direct sales to office managers, a web ordering portal, referrals from building management.
- Customer relationships: account manager for each office, monthly menu review.
- Revenue streams: per-meal pricing on a monthly contract; event catering per head.
- Key resources: licensed central kitchen, food safety approvals, delivery vans, chefs.
- Key activities: menu planning, cooking, delivery, food safety management.
- Key partnerships: produce suppliers, packaging supplier, delivery partner for peaks.
- Cost structure: kitchen rent, staff, ingredients, vehicles, licences and insurance.
When a canvas is enough, and when it is not
- Enough: testing an idea, aligning co-founders, preparing for a first conversation with a mentor or partner.
- Not enough for a bank or funding programme: lenders want financial projections and evidence, usually in a feasibility study or business plan. See feasibility study vs business plan.
- Not enough for investors: they expect a pitch deck and, after interest, a business plan and financial model.
- Not enough for free zone or visa applications that ask for a plan: follow the authority’s own format. See our guide to business plans for UAE free zone companies.

Business model canvas: common questions
What are the 9 blocks of the business model canvas?
Customer segments, value propositions, channels, customer relationships, revenue streams, key resources, key activities, key partnerships and cost structure.
Is a business model canvas the same as a business plan?
No. The canvas is a one-page summary of how the business works. A business plan adds market evidence, operations, team and financial projections.
Will a UAE bank accept a business model canvas?
Usually not on its own. Banks typically ask for financial statements or projections and a business plan or feasibility study. Check the bank’s requirements.
Can Labeeb turn our canvas into a business plan?
Yes. Labeeb writes business plans, feasibility studies and pitch decks for UAE and GCC founders. We agree the scope and price with you before any work starts.
